With almost 40 years of experience in the practice of Medicine and Internal Medicine and over 20 years of experience as a Pharmaceutical Medicine Expert, Varvara Baroutsou led scientific research and development (R&D) departments, focusing on medicines development, through translational research and clinical trials to document innovative treatments.
Varvara Baroutsou started her career as an academic research fellow, hospital physician and clinical researcher at N.N.Th.A (Sotiria) and Am. Fleming and then took senior leadership roles in clinical development and medical teams of large pharmaceutical and biotech companies (BIANEX, MSD, Abbott, Sanofi, Novartis) in Greece and as Head of Western Europe.
Currently, as President of the International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Pharmaceutical Medicine (IFAPP), she collaborates with non-profit scientific organisations (CIOMS, WMA, PharmaTrain, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine
-FPM), universities (ECPM-Switzerland, King’s College, UK), patient associations and international organisations to implement initiatives of excellence in clinical research with patient involvement in accordance with modern bioethical frameworks (Stavros Niarchos Bioethics Academy Alumni).
Her academic experience includes roles as a reviewer and editor of scientific journals, publications, scientific book chapters, teaching in postgraduate programmes in Medicine, Public Health, Biomedical Research and advisory contributions to educational, technical and regulatory standards committees. She is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Athens, a Certified Consultant, Global Fellow in Medicines Development (GFMD), with post graduate studies in Health Economics from the Stockholm School of Economics and a European Market Access Diploma from the University of Lyon (EMAUD).
