PROFESSIONAL POSITION
Current Position: Biostatistician, Post-Doctoral Research Associate
Laboratory of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)
Consultant in Data Analysis
Environmental Research Group, School of Public Health, Imperial College London, London, UK.
2003 – present Participation as Biostatistician in the following European epidemiological studies:
EXPANSE (EXposome Powered tools for healthy living in urbAN Setting): mainly aiming to investigate exposure of individuals to a set of environmental and other exposures in heart- respiratory health. EXHAUSTION (Exposure to heat and air pollution in EUrope – cardiopulmonaty impacts and benefits of mitigation and adaptation): has as its main objective to investigate the joint effects of air pollution and temperature on cardiopulmonary health. STEAM (Comparative evaluation of Spatio-Temporal Exposure Assessment Methods for estimating the health effects of air pollution): its main objective is to develop spatio-temporal models in London for the assessment of personal exposure to air pollution for use in epidemiological studies. RESPOZE (Respiratory Effects of Ozone Exposure in Children): its main objective is to investigate the effects of personal exposure to ozone on the respiratory system of school-age children. MAPHEAT (Mapping of air-pollution and estimating its health effects in the greater area of Athens and Thessaloniki): its main objective is to map air-pollution and estimate its effects on human health in the greater area of Athens and Thessaloniki. ESCAPE (European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects) – its main objective is to investigate the long-term health effects of air pollution using GIS. MED-PARTICLES (Particles size and composition in Mediterranean countries: geographical variability and short-term health effects) – its main objective is to investigate the short-term health effects of air pollution in Mediterranean countries. HYENA (Hypertension and Exposure to Noise near Airports) – has as its main objective to investigate the effect of noise from air and road traffic on the development of cardiovascular disease AIRGENE (Air Pollution and Inflammatory Response in Myocardial Infarction Survivors: Gene-Environment-Interactions in High-Risk Group) – has as its main objective to investigate environmental and genetic interactions in individuals with previous myocardial infarction (high-risk group). APHEA (APHEA-POL, APHENA, PHEWE) (Air Pollution and Health – A European Approach) – has as its main objective to investigate the impact of air pollution on mortality and the development of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
Biostatistics and epidemiology, with emphasis on environmental epidemiology. Applications in biostatistics to investigate the effects of exposure to environmental factors (e.g. air pollution, noise, urban environment, temperature change) on health. Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to develop statistical hybrid spatio-temporal models (e.g. combination of LUR models, diffusion models, machine learning algorithms, satellite data) to estimate exposure to environmental agents for subsequent use in epidemiological studies. Management and analysis of big data of individual health information collected through automated systems (administrative cohorts), of demographic and environmental factors. Meta-analysis.
